Lifelike tessellations begin with Art Nouveau

Many Art Nouveau designs contain densley packed motifs, like this Nellie Syrett design for the Yellow Book of 1896.

The middle part is very close to, 'Eight Heads' one of Escher's first prints.

Some William Morris patterns in which close packed plant shapes are separated by a black line are very nearly tessellations.
